EDF Luminus builds a new wind turbine at Evonik's site in Antwerp
EDF Luminus and Evonik join forces
EDF Luminus and Evonik initiate their joint project to install a Repower wind turbine (3.4 MW) at Evonik’s site, close to the Tijsman West tunnel in Antwerp.
Preparations for the construction are on-going. The foundation is set to be in place by June 2013, while the mast is to be erected and blades are to be mounted in August 2013. The wind turbine is scheduled to be operational by October 2013.
Lower energy bill
The windmill will supply 8,000,000 kWh of renewable energy per year, i.e. 3% of Evonik’s annual consumption. Thanks to its favourable location near the Western Scheldt, the turbine will generate 17% more than the average. The total generated wind power will be consumed by Evonik. This will have a favourable impact on the company’s energy bill.
Positive impact on the environment
The installation of this wind turbine means an annual reduction in CO2 emissions by 3,450 tonnes (*), i.e. the equivalent of the emissions of 1,495 cars or 575 households.
EDF Luminus has been investing in the production of renewable energy for over 50 years. 9% of the energy produced comes from renewable energy sources of Belgian origin. EDF Luminus is thus a major player in renewable energy generation in our country.
Companies with a sustainable policy
Thanks to its 58 wind turbines, EDF Luminus produces 261 GWh of renewable energy every year. Under light wind conditions, peak units take over in order to meet the electricity demand. Moreover, EDF Luminus has submitted permit applications for more than 100 MW wind turbines.
Sustainability is an important issue for both companies’ management. By installing the wind turbine and switching to alternative energy, Evonik takes its green policy to the next level and can therefore further reduce the CO2 footprint of its products.
